1. Say Hi to the Party Trick

Want to make your photos colorful? Well, look no further than the stock camera app. It comes with a bunch of nifty built-in filters that let you experiment with different effects. The best part is that you can enable these filters in the wide-angle and the 2x zoom modes. On your OnePlus 8 or OnePlus 8 Pro, head over to the Photo mode and tap on the Filter icon on the upper-right corner, and the filters will be lined up near the Shutter button. Just pick one and click away. The classic B&W filter turns to be quite handy. OnePlus 8 Pro users also have the added gimmicky feature called the Photocrom filter which lends a grey and copper color tones to images. Lately, this filter has been in the news reportedly for the camera can see through materials like plastic and thin clothing. The said mode has been disabled in China and should be disabled in Indian units soon. Global users can expect to see an OTA update with some improvements meant for the Photocrom filter.

2. Unlock the 48-Megapixel Shooter

Both the OnePlus 8 Pro and the OnePlus 8 lets you shoot at 48-megapixel or 12-megapixel. While the latter is the default mode, you can always switch to the former, especially if you have a lot of ambient light, or looking to crop out part of the images later. Thankfully, unlike the previous iterations, the 48-megapixel mode is not just limited to the Pro Mode. Yep, you read that right. With the new OnePlus 8 series, you can unlock it right from the Photo mode. All you need to do is tap on the icon that says 12MP at the top and select 48MP from the menu. That’s it — point, shoot, and get a printout of your shots with all the details intact. Pro Tip: Slide your fingers gently over one of the three zoom icons on the camera interface and watch the magic unfold. Yep, you can thank me later.

3. Check out UltraShot HDR

Want to have the right balance of light and dark on your photos? Worry not, the built-in UltraShot HDR will take care of that for you. This new feature analyzes the frame and applies different presets and HDR effects to get you an optimal photo with the right balance of shadow and light. To enable it, tap on the Settings option located at the top-right corner and toggle the switch for UltraShot HDR. At the same time, have you noticed a slight amount of distortion in the wide-angle photos? Yeah, wide-angle lenses are prone to distortion. Thankfully, they can be easily corrected. Go to the Settings and activate the Ultra Wide Lens Correction option, and your phone will take care of the rest. Yep, as simple as that. Cool Tip: Want a little assistance on your photography journey? Enable the Smart Content Detection option and watch the camera come to your assistance when you point the camera to shoot. For example, it will prompt you to switch to the Wide-angle mode when clicking pictures of valleys and wide vistas.

4. Hello Miniatures

While the OnePlus 8 Pro has a 5-megapixel color filter, OnePlus 8 users can rejoice in the Macro mode. This option lets you bring out greater details in objects like flowers, insects, or other small objects. All you need to do is keep in mind the lighting conditions and the background bokeh. To activate the Macro Mode, switch to the Photo Mode and tap on the little Flower-shaped icon at the top. Once the Macro mode is activated, point your camera towards a small object and start your experiments. To disable this mode, follow the same path. However, the renders of the macro mode are a little muddy for my liking. Hopefully, the company will fix that in a future update. Speaking of experiments, you can also enable the filter modes in the macro mode. For instance, if you want a B&W close up of a flower, combining these two modes will make it all possible.

5. Switch Between JPG and RAW

The photo enthusiast in you must already know that RAW photos capture more details and that offers more options to edit photos during post-processing. And like its predecessors, the OnePlus 8 series phones also let you capture RAW photos through the Pro Mode. The Pro Mode has a trove of hidden settings. It allows you to take full advantage of the 48-megapixel camera. To do that, simply tap on the icon that says RAW, select JPG 48MP from the menu and click away. Also, you can save two of your favorite Pro Mode settings. Yep, you read that right. So, once you have tweaked the ISO, exposure, and the white balance as per your preference, tap on the C icon at the top of the viewfinder and select either C1 or C2. These buttons signify the custom user settings that you’ve picked for applying the effects or particular settings. Once done, tap on the Save icon near the shutter button, and that’s it! A new preset for you is right there waiting for you.

6. Hello Super Stabilization

People with shaky hands will love the Super Stable mode on the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro for the stability it brings to the table. It negates the stutters and the jolts, especially if you shoot while moving or running. To enable it, simply tap on the hand-shaped icon at the top and boom! For now, the Super stabilization is only supported up to 4K resolution at 30fps Speaking of resolutions, did you know that the new OnePlus 8 series phones now let you shoot 4K videos at 60fps in the 21:9 aspect ratio? The option is available under Settings > Video resolution, and boy, does it render cinematic videos. However, don’t expect to see the Super Stable mode here.

7. Save Custom Modes

Do you use some camera modes more often than the others? Perhaps, Portrait mode is your favorite? If yes, you might want to group these modes so that it’s easier for you to reach your favorites. After all, you wouldn’t want to keep swiping right or left to reach it when you see a beautiful scene, right? To do so, head over to the Settings and scroll down until you see the option for Custom modes. Now, all you need to do is drag and drop the modes. Simple, right? Also, if you do not use modes such as Timelapse, you can remove them as well. The best part is that you can readily access them all when you swipe up on the screen. Cool, I must say.
