The main advantage of sleep state is it doesn’t drain the battery of laptops. It uses very small amount of power. Also, if your computer’s sleep state gets extended for a long hours then it hibernates by default.

How to put your computer on sleep

You can do this by various ways. By pressing power button of laptop (if power setting allow it to sleep), also by closing the lid of laptop, by using the option in the start menu in desktops etc.

How to wake your computer from the state of sleep

This can be done by pressing any keyboard button, clicking mouse button or opening the lid of your laptop (all these options depend upon the power settings of your computer).

What is the sleep problem in computer

You put your computer to sleep state by pressing power button or by closing lid but after few seconds it wakes up again. It won’t stay in the sleep mode. This is the sleep problem we are talking about here. It could be due to an issue with hardware such as keyboard, mouse network adaptor, any USB device that supports wake up from sleep functionality or could be due to media sharing.

How to solve this problem

You can solve this problem by disabling the option which allows a device to wake the computer. To do this click on Start button. Type Device manager inside the search box provided. Click on the result. On device option expand Mice and other pointing devices option. Right click on PS/2 Compatible Mouse option. Select Properties. On Power Management tab, uncheck the option “Allow this device to wake up the computer”. Click OK. Note: After disabling this option you wouldn’t be able to wake up your computer by moving or clicking your mouse. So disable it only if you actually want to deactivate this function. In the similar way you can disable other hardware such as keyboard and network adapters.

Solving multimedia sharing sleep problem

If you have a network attached storage then media player file sharing could result in waking up of your computer. To get rid of this problem you can disable multimedia file sharing option by opening Windows media player. Click on Library> Media sharing. Now uncheck the box given next to “Share my media”. Click OK. The above method would solve your PC’s sleep problems but it is not the correct solution because you have to compromise with media sharing. There is another method by which you can solve sleep problem without disabling the media sharing. For this go to Control panel -> Power options (While you are at it, check out our comprehensive power options guide for Windows ). Click on Change plan settings link given below selected plan. Click on “Change advance power settings”. In advanced settings expand Multimedia settings. Then expand “When sharing media”. Click on drop down next to Plugged in. Select “Allow the computer to sleep”. That’s it. Your computer wouldn’t wake up now while sharing media. There are other workarounds too to solve the sleep problem. One of them would be to just use the Hibernate option (saves all the current work in memory and switch off the power completely). Next time when you get back to your work, it will again resume your work when again you start your PC. But hibernating a PC takes time and may not be the preferred method to put your PC to rest frequently. The above article may contain affiliate links which help support Guiding Tech.
